Tide trounces Trojans 79-60

Box score

A thorough asskicking from beginning to end.... this game was never in doubt. Green was unstoppable in the 1st half, Hillman with a monster dunk, and Tony Mitchell solid throughout.

Only sore spot is 3 point shooting... and it was fine in the 1st half. We destroyed a team I thought would give us trouble.

This team is improving, and I believe is ahead of where it was at this point last year. For the most part, we did a good job against the zone. 3 point shooting wasn't great, but we did enough from beyond the arc to loosen things up inside. Jamychal Green had a good day and played aggressively as we need him to. We had 4 guys score in double digits. I wish this game were televised because Senario Hillman had an epic dunk over a Troy defender in the 1st half that would have been worthy of a Sportscenter top 10. We've got a few guys who can really play above the rim.

We seem to be much better at taking advantage of our opposition's mistakes so far this year. Last season, we forced a lot of turnovers but often could not finish in transition. We look a lot more comfortable in the way we attack the basket after a turnover.

Tony Mitchell sprained or jammed a finger at one point, but he got it taped up and was able to finish the game without problems. It appears that Steele might be out for a while.

Engstrom is playing hard and his positioning and footwork appears to be improving some, but he still looks like a 2 year project, at best. Right now, he has worse hands than Evan Brock, and I didn't think that was humanly possible.

The crowd was pathetic last night, maybe 2-3,000. It was a rainy Monday night so that's somewhat understable. I left Birmingham at 4:45pm and didn't get to Tuscaloosa till 6:15. Idiots in this city cannot drive in the rain, I counted 6 wrecks.

Coach Scott Cochran, the football strength and conditioning coach was at the game. I hope he continues to attend games, I think he could really get his section fired up in the bigger games. After JaMychal Green picked up his first foul, Coach Cochran yelled out "C'mon JaMychal! If you're gonna foul make it count. KNOCK HIS ASS OUT!"

Anyway, this team has some obvious weaknesses that will get exposed against better competition, but I like the chemistry and the way they have taken care of business so far. It will be interesting to see how they handle their first games away from home at the Paradise Jam this weekend. Playing 3 games in 4 days could also be a challenge give our style of play and our lack of depth.
